Much of my late teens and twenties was spent in discussion about music with people; driving to record stores and then spending hours perusing; and actually listening to what I owned, repeatedly. I've thought about 7th grade, where I had like SIX records, and how many times I played them over and over again - The Pretenders' and the B-52s' first albums in particular, to the point where I still remember every note and lyric of every one of those songs. Having six records ensures you really get to know those records pretty damn well.
